Ten years before the book Gone is placed, a meteorite struck close to Perido Beach. When the meteorite struck, part of the power plant was broken causing a radiation leak. The officials announced that they had contained all of the radiation when, in fact, it was all under the town. So, the residents of Perido Beach, theoretically, were eating and drinking radiation.
